The Cromwell/Kay Francis Connection

John Cromwell directed his wife, Kay Johnson in: Of Human Bondage `34, This Man Is Mine `34, Village Tale `35, Jalna `35, and Son of Fury: The Story of Benjamin Blake `42.

Cromwell directed Kay Francis in: Street of Chance `30, For the Defense `30, Scandal Sheet `31, The Vice Squad `31, and In Name Only `39.

Kay Francis and Kay Johnson appeared together in Passion Flower `31.
-----------------------------------------------------
Kay also took time to reconnect with old friend Kay Johnson, who had already moved to the West Coast. Although the two were never apparently never physically involved, they were intimate and toyed with a sexual relationship. Johnson had married director John Cromwell in 1928 and later became the mother of actor James Cromwell in 1940. On April 21, 1929, Kay wrote in her diary that she'd been to Kay Johnsons's alone for a talk, and that Johnson pledged her lifelong love to Kay.
